Right now, in the UK, more dogs are being forced into a wretched life of violence, drugs, and abuse. This is the harsh reality of the underground world of dog fighting.

Your donation today could help us end this abhorrent cruelty once and for all.

BRED TO KILL AND BE KILLED

From a young age, fighting dogs are engineered so that they do not respond to pain – to the extent that they will ignore their own suffering. They are also bred to not display signs of aggression such as raised hackles or baring of teeth. They are robbed entirely of their natural social behaviour and instead designed to fight regardless of the cruelty inflicted.

TRAINED TO EXHAUSTION

The training methods can be as brutal as the actual fights. Dogs may be forced to run on treadmills for several hours a day, made to swim, or forced to hang for hours at a time from tyres suspended from tree branches. This is all in an effort to build up their stamina and muscle so that they are more likely to withstand a painful, enduring fight. Or to put it bluntly, so that they are worth more money to the dog fighting gangs.

FOUGHT TO THE DEATH

Organised dog fights can last between 30 minutes and five hours, and can result in severe injuries to the poor animals, including torn flesh, severe blood loss, and sometimes death. Just imagine the pain these dogs go through – hours of being goaded by people to bite and tear into each other. Even if they survive the fight they may die later from shock or from their injuries, or deliberately killed for losing the fight and bringing disgrace to their handlers.

THE LEAGUE IS WORKING TO END THIS EVIL ‘SPORT’

Although dog fighting is illegal in the UK, the current penalties include a maximum jail term of six months. This is unacceptable, considering the pain and suffering inflicted. We need a real deterrent that will stop even the most hard-core dog fighters.

That’s why the League Against Cruel Sports is calling for:

  • A five year maximum sentence for dog fighting offences
  • Making dog fighting a specific, recordable offence
  • Establishing a national register of people banned from keeping dogs (and other animals)

There is no doubt that dog fighting is one of the cruellest sports that occurs in the UK and it is time that our government takes it seriously and does everything it can to stop it for good.

So, please make a donation today and help dogs get the protection they desperately need from this evil ‘sport’.
