Meet Our: Public Affairs Officer (Wales)

My First Five Months at the League

I joined the League Against Cruel Sports just over five months ago, and in that short time, I have already had the chance to be involved in a wide range of interesting a varied work. It has been a whirlwind of learning, meeting inspiring people, tackling challenges, and seizing new opportunities. It has also been filled with powerful and rewarding moments.

As the Public Affairs Officer for Wales, my role focuses on engaging with key stakeholders and partners in Wales, supporting campaigns, and helping to shape and influence policy that protects animals from cruelty, while being uncompromising in our mission to end cruelty to animals in the name of sport.

Working at the League is not only professionally fulfilling, but also meaningful on a personal level. Like everyone at the League, and all those who support us, I care passionately about animal welfare. I also feel incredibly proud that I get to represent the voice of all our supporters who care just as deeply about our mission, but who may not have the time to dedicate to it every day. Turning that shared passion into real change is something truly special.

A Connected Team – Even from Afar

Although our team is based all across the UK, one of the first things that struck me was how connected I felt to everyone. While I work remotely here in Wales, there are always opportunities to come together, whether through team catch-ups, national events, or campaign activities — those moments really help to strengthen the sense of connection and shared purpose.

Remote working suits me well too. It gives me flexibility, and with the whole of Wales as my workspace, I can work from anywhere and adapt to different situations! It is a unique setup that brings a lot of value to my day-to-day work.

Embracing Opportunities and Growing in Confidence

The League really believes in investing in its people. Early on, I was encouraged to take part in media training — and like many, I found the idea of being in front of a camera or speaking on the radio quite a daunting prospect.

However, the training was incredibly professional, and with plenty of support and encouragement from the team, it turned out to be a hugely positive experience.

It boosted my confidence and completely changed how I approach public speaking — and even shifted my attitude towards the media more generally. What once felt intimidating now feels like an exciting opportunity to share our message with an even wider audience.

There are also regular chances to get hands-on experience — whether it’s helping out on our wildlife reserves, joining campaign activities, or supporting community events. These opportunities have helped, and continue to help, me grow and develop a skill set that goes well beyond a traditional public affairs role. There are plenty of situations to embrace and throw yourself into, and that variety makes the work all the more rewarding!

Challenges That Drive Us Forward

Like any meaningful role, this one has its challenges. Trying to influence policy in a complex and shifting political landscape can be tough and sometimes slow. But those challenges make every success more meaningful. Each step forward is a testament to the determination and passion of our team.

One of the most rewarding parts of the role has been meeting people from across Wales and beyond who all share the same purpose and spirit to create a kinder world for animals. It is incredibly meaningful to be part of something so impactful, and to know that our work truly makes a difference.

To be involved with an organisation that has a proud history, spanning over 100 years — and being connected to that legacy is something really special.

Looking Ahead

It has only been five months, but already I feel proud to be part of a community that is so committed to change. Every day I learn something new, and I feel lucky to be working to achieve a cause that means so much to so many.

I am excited to see what the next five months bring — and beyond! Because at the League we are not just talking about change, we are making it happen.

Here’s to the next big win for animals — and all the milestones still to come!

Jamie, Public Affairs Officer (Wales)
