Be kind to greyhounds

This Christmas we are raising awareness of the need to be kind to animals. The greyhound industry is cruel and we do not wish to see it return to Oxford city.

With a warm open heart, Sarah Evans-Roberts shares her act of kindness in rescuing Evie, an ex-greyhound racer, and why this Christmas we must say no to greyhound racing in Oxford. 

Kindness in action

Meet Evie, a six-year-old rescued greyhound who is one of three rehomed by Sarah and her family.

Sarah said: "Evie joined us in an unexpected way one New Year’s Eve, when we came across her on a fund-raising walk. Evie was looking for a temporary foster home after going to a rescue centre from a dog pound, courtesy of a bin...well, a skip."

"A pure-bred, tattooed greyhound that had been thrown into a skip and left for dead on a cold New Year's Eve – why would anyone do that to an animal?

"The answer was this: Evie was seen as a commodity and deemed useless, likely due to her lack of speed, or the fact she didn't want to run on demand.

"Evie has turned out to be the most gorgeous, loving and trusting pet. As with many rescued greyhounds, she has skeletons in her closet that we may never conquer, but she adores us, and we adore her.

"Evie loves to run - she flies in fact, and now that she has 'found herself' she enjoys the thrill of a stimulating woodland walk with plenty to focus on.

"It was Evie who taught me that racing greyhounds are commodities."
