Members’ Motions to the League Against Cruel Sports

Members play a vital role in shaping the future of the charity. Our motions process provides an opportunity for our Members to put forward ideas, raise issues and encourage discussion on the topics that matter to you and other Members.

This page explains how the process works, what Members can expect at each stage, and how a Member can submit or support a motion. Your voice matters. Your ideas can help shape the future of the League.

Definition of a Motion

A motion is a formal proposal submitted by a Member for consideration by the membership at an Annual General Meeting (AGM). A motion allows Members to express a view, make a decision, or request that the Board of Trustees consider a particular course of action relating to the charity's purposes, activities, governance or strategic direction.

 A motion should:

  • Relate to the charity’s objects, activities, governance or affairs
  • Be clear, specific and capable of being understood by Members
  • Set out the action, outcome or position being proposed
  • Be accompanied by a brief explanatory statement outlining the rationale for the proposal.

How to submit a motion for the 2027 AGM

Do you have an idea or suggestion you’d like Members to consider at the AGM? You can submit a motion by 31 December 2026.

  • Please provide the title of your motion, a brief explanation and the reason for your proposal using the form below. Submissions should be no more than 200 words.
  • The resolution should clearly articulate the motion which Members are being asked to consider, ideally within a few short words. Longer or multi-part resolutions can be confusing. The additional written statement of up to 200 words can be used to provide further information.
  • The use of images in the published resolution is not permitted.
  • If your motion is accepted, it will be shared with the Membership to obtain the signatures of at least 0.3% of the League’s membership* in order to be included on the AGM agenda.
  • One must sign as a 'proposer' and other Members will sign as 'supporters'. This is in line with the League’s by-laws. You will also be required to attend the AGM to formally present your motion for debate and voting.

*0.3% of the membership or 15 signatures (whichever is higher). Members must not be in arrears with their membership payments. Signatories in support of the motion must provide their name and membership number. There will be the opportunity for Members, in advance of the AGM, to submit amendments to accepted motions.

Understanding motion submissions

Please note that meeting the number of supporting signatures does not guarantee that a motion will be accepted for consideration at the AGM.

The Board retains discretion to accept, reject, amend or request amendments to motions where one or more of the following apply:

  1. The motion or supporting statement is defamatory, vexatious, discriminatory, misleading, frivolous, unlawful or inappropriate;
  2. The motion is inconsistent with the charity's governing documents, legal obligations, or regulatory requirements;
  3. The motion falls outside the scope of the charity's objects, purposes or activities;
  4. The motion substantially duplicates another motion already under consideration for the same AGM;
  5. The subject matter of the motion has been considered and determined through an AGM motion within the previous three years, unless there has been a material change in circumstances;
  6. The motion would require the charity to act beyond its powers or commit resources in a manner that Trustees reasonably believe would not be in the charity’s best interests;
  7. At least three-quarters of Trustees consider the motion not materially relevant to the charity’s purposes, strategy or operations.

If a motion is not accepted, or if changes are suggested before it can be considered, you will be contacted directly with further information.
