Vote to pause hunting on council land praised by the League

Councillors at Cheshire West and Chester Council have voted to pause ‘trail’ hunting on its land – a move welcomed by national animal welfare charity the League Against Cruel Sports.

In a vote today the council paused the so-called ‘sport’ while it prepares for the publication of a report into the practice.

The League and other local hunt monitor groups have provided data to the council for its report. The charity has praised it for its considered and thoughtful approach to the issue.

Nick Weston, the League’s head of campaigns, said: “The hunts themselves describe so-called trail hunting as a smokescreen, and that can only mean a disguise for the real hunting and chasing of foxes.

“This is borne out by reports we’ve compiled that include foxes being chased and killed in the council’s area, hounds being killed on roads, hounds attacking a pet dog, and hounds trespassing on private land. This simply wouldn’t happen if the hounds were following a properly-laid trail.

“We await the views of Cheshire West and Chester residents on this topic, and invite them to share any issues they have had with packs of hounds and hunts. It’s vital they let their voice be heard.”

The report is due to be presented to the council’s cabinet in November.
