League statement – Gordon Elliott

The League commends the British Horseracing Authority for prohibiting Irish trainer Gordon Elliott from racing in Britain following the publication of a heart-breaking picture of him sitting astride a dead horse.

The picture is similar to those taken of so-called hunters who pose with the carcasses of animals they have killed just for their value as trophies.

To sit on a recently-deceased horse while smiling and gesturing is disgusting. It’s certainly not the action of a man who has equine welfare as his foremost consideration.

The League has long campaigned for better horse welfare, and we’re looking forward to the outcome of the investigation by the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board into the circumstances surrounding this outrageous picture.
