Deer park visitors horrified to learn of Trophy Hunting

On Bank holiday Monday League Against Cruel Sports volunteers from Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire joined up with Bedfordshire Against Trophy Hunting (BATH) to raise awareness of the issue of trophy hunting that is taking place at Woburn Deer park. The team split up into four groups covering each entrance to the Safari park, Deer park and the town centre to ensure we could speak to all visitors coming into Woburn as well as residents. Wearing high viz we were able to stop the cars going into the parks and arm them with the gruesome facts of the reality of trophy hunting happening on their very own doorstep. Visitors were absolutely horrified to hear that tour companies bring trophy hunting parties into Woburn park and offer Red Deer for up to £25,000 a kill. Many said they would take action by writing to the estate and one lady thanked us for being there. One resident said he had lived in the town for forty years and had no idea that this took place, he was unsurprisingly upset and disgusted!

We were soon visited by the police and the park manager. The park manager, visibly cross, tried to move us on saying that the Duke of Bedford did not want us on his land. We believed we were on a public highway and at this point and were wrapping up anyway after a very successful day. Bedfordshire Against Trophy hunting were also very successful at their entrance to the safari park, the police had also observed them and saw no problem in what they were doing.
