Meet our team of League Experts

We are very grateful to our team of League Experts who offer their expertise, knowledge and support to us by providing pro bono services. Like us they have a passion for defending persecuted animals. We believe in working collaboratively to influence the general public, politicians and generations below us to allow us to live in a society where cruelty to animals in the name of ‘sport’ is a thing of the past. Thank you to all our League Experts for sharing our vision and working alongside us.

Douglas Bachelor

Douglas joined the League as Chief Executive in 1999 when the hunting fraternity were doing their best to see off opposition to hunting and coursing.

As a former farms and estates manager and consultant to agricultural businesses, he understood that cruelty to animals was never good for the animals, the farmers or for business. Because of his background he was able to argue, that hunting and coursing were both cruel and unnecessary.

He has always fought against bullying and oppression, particularly where people in positions of power seek to ride roughshod over those less fortunate or less able to stand up for themselves. For Douglas hunting and coursing are clear cases of abuse, not just of animals but of people too.

Clive Nancarrow

Professor Emeritus Clive Nancarrow has served as a trustee for Working for Wildlife and then the League for a total of seventeen years. He is a League-trained hunt observer and monitored for five years. Pro bono he offers the League research expertise, in particular, on supporter research, polling and employee research. In addition, he offers marketing and branding expertise. He, of course, also can be called on by trustees and staff for “corporate knowledge” and the history of the League.

As well as experience in education he has worked full-time for three research agencies and a major international company commissioning research. He has been retained by major global brands.

Peter Anderson

Peter has been involved in the animal welfare sector for forty years and is a longstanding member of the League. Having joined its Executive Committee in 1996 and serving on the Board of Trustees for eleven years, including various Trustee sub-committees and acted as the League’s media representative in the South West in the lead up to the passage of the Hunting Act 2004. During this time he has acquired experience of strategic and policy development within the animal welfare sector, as well as extensive knowledge of hunting and other cruel sports.

Professionally, Peter has over twenty-five years’ experience of the higher and further education sectors, focussing on strategic and operational planning, policy development, budget setting and performance monitoring.

Nigel Brazier

Nigel Brazier is a partner at Burnand Brazier Malcolm Wilson. He has acted for the League for many years, providing legal advice and expertise pro bono and also undertaking a number of services, focused on conveyancing and the transfer of sporting rights. His work is helping us protect animals from persecution across the UK and we are privileged to have him on our side.

    Why The League

Hurting and killing animals for ‘sport’ is one of the principal causes of animal cruelty in the UK: tens of millions suffer and die each year for ‘leisure’ activities. We’re here to protect those animals.

    Strengthen the Hunting Act

The Hunting Act 2004 is the law which bans chasing wild mammals with dogs in England and Wales – this basically means that fox hunting, deer hunting, hare hunting, hare coursing and mink hunting are all illegal, as they all are cruel sports based on dogs chasing wild mammals.
