The League Against Cruel Sports has welcomed today’s statement by Environment Minister Mark H Durkan, where it was confirmed that the Snares Order (Northern Ireland) 2015 will be withdrawn.

The Order was intended to amend the current regulations on snaring, but without a full ban the suffering caused by snares would have remained.

Janice Watt, the League’s Senior Public Affairs Officer for Northern Ireland, commented:

"We are delighted that the Minister has agreed to re-think legislation on snaring. Snares are indiscriminate and cruel, causing horrific injuries to thousands of animals in Northern Ireland each year.

"Nothing short of a full ban on the manufacture, importation, sale, and use of snares will stop the mass suffering they cause – the Snares Order would have kept them legal, and so it is right that the Minister will withdraw it.

"We look forward to working with him and all parties in the Assembly to implement a full ban on snares in Northern Ireland.”
