Catalan politicians urged to notch up another sporting success and ban bullfighting

A leading UK animal welfare charity is urging politicians in the Catalan region of Spain to vote for common sense and ban bullfighting in a historic vote scheduled to take place on Wednesday 28 July.

This is the third and final vote on the issue, with the previous two passed in favour of an end to bullfighting in the region. If Wednesday’s vote is passed, Catalonia will become the second region in the country to put a stop to the cruelty of bullfighting. The Canary Islands were the first to do so back in 1991.

The Bill, which could see the ‘sport’ consigned to the history books, began last year following a petition by anti bullfighting organisations which collected in excess of 180,000 signatures. A decision in Catalonia to ban bullfighting will boost the political profile of the issue and could influence other regions to follow suit. Madrid’s regional Parliament has already agreed to discuss including a ban on bullfighting on its agenda.

A League Against Cruel Sports spokeswoman said: “Spain has had a number of sporting successes this year including at the World Cup and Wimbledon and this is an opportunity for them to put cruel ‘sports’ behind them and focus on proper sport. A decision in Catalonia to ban bullfighting could be the catalyst needed for other regions to follow suit and move towards a bullfighting free Spain”.
