Stricter sentencing for dangerous dog offences welcomed by animal welfare charity
New guidelines which allow tougher sentencing for anyone convicted of dangerous dog offences have been welcomed by the League Against Cruel Sports.
The Sentencing Council has today (Tuesday) issued guidance for courts to allow for consistency and appropriateness when sentencing anyone found guilty of dangerous dog related offences. The guidelines encourage courts to make full use of their powers and will mean more offenders receive custodial sentences.
The problem of dog fighting has been taken into account on offences related to prohibited breeds and provisions are now in place to increase the seriousness of an offence where there is evidence of dogs being trained for fighting or the owner being in possession of paraphernalia for dog fighting.
Chief Executive of the League, Joe Duckworth said: “This is a hugely positive step forward in tackling the problem of dog fighting. Allowing courts to extend tougher and more rigorous sentences to individuals involved in this barbaric blood sport before a dog fight has actually taken place is a very welcome approach. The new guidelines include a multitude of sensible provisions for courts which extend much further than just dog fighting and we are delighted to have been involved in the consultation process”.
Courts will be expected to follow the new guidance from 20th August 2012.
