Charity welcomes challenge to badger cull
The League Against Cruel Sports has today (Friday) welcomed a Judicial Review which will challenge the decision to carry out a badger cull in parts of England later this year.
The Badger Trust lodged the legal challenge in February following the announcement by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) to cull badgers in parts on West Gloucestershire and West Somerset. A judge has taken the decision that a review will go ahead in the High Court based on the grounds that the cull may be unlawful and could in fact add to the spread of bovine TB.
Chief Executive of the League Against Cruel Sports Joe Duckworth said: “It is a relief that finally we are seeing some common sense when it comes to dealing with the serious and devastating problem of bovine TB. The decision to carry out pilot culls was misguided and inappropriate and I’m delighted the Badger Trust has been successful in obtaining a Judicial Review. The Badger Trust has our full support on this and we can only hope the outcome of the review is positive”.
The Welsh Government has recently announced that it has shelved plans for a cull and is instead opting for a five year vaccination programme.
