League Hails Seville Demo a Success

19 April 2007

Protestors from across Europe gathered for a demonstration in the bullfighting capital of Seville last Friday, demanding that Andalucia be known for culture NOT torture. It was the first time that the anti-bullfighting movement had dared to hold a march in the Andalucian capital - the birthplace of bullfighting - and the demo was deemed a massive success by the those taking part.

As well as to highlight the huge amount of anti-bullfighting feeling that exists in Spain, the aim of the event was also to show the bullfighting industry quite how far reaching the anti-bullfighting movement has become. There were groups from all corners of Andalucia, as well as Madrid, Basc Country, Catalonia, and Valadolid. These were joined by protestors from the Dutch Group CAS and, of course, the UK's League Against Cruel Sports.

Preceding the demo, which took place outside Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza, Seville's main bullring , a petition was handed to the Andalucian Government demanding an increase in protection for animals. Later that day 6 bulls were killed in the ring to mark the beginning of the 3 week bullfighting festival, 'Feria de Abril'. Shockingly, over 200 bulls will be killed in that bullring over the next 12 months.

Following the success of this landmark demo, organisers have already sworn to repeat the protest next year, with each protestor pledging to bring10 more people next year. The anti-bullfighting movement is growing everyday and the League will play its part in ensuring that it continues to touch more people all over the world and that the crowds outside the bullring in Seville are even larger in 2008.
