League welcomes Oakham Councils Cottesmore Hunt rejection

30 November 2015

fox looking backFollowing news that Oakham Council have rejected the Cottesmore Hunt's Boxing Day request, Tom Quinn, Campaigns Director for League Against Cruel Sports said:  “We applaud Oakham Town Council’s decision to reject the Cottesmore Hunt’s request to hold its Boxing Day meet in the town’s Cutts Close.

“Earlier this year a Cottesmore Hunt employee was convicted for the illegal blocking up of a badger sett.  It is right that the majority of Oakham Councillors felt that the town should not accommodate a hunt which treats the law with so much contempt that it continues to employ convicted criminal Dean Jones as its terrierman.

“Could this vote be a watershed moment?  Perhaps Oakham Town Council’s resolve will give other councils the confidence they need to reject Boxing Day requests from hunts that are clearly linked to unlawful activity.”

Do residents want a Boxing Day Meet? 83%of the national population prefer foxhunting to stay illegal, and the way these people flagrantly go beyond the law and decent moral limits makes this idea of celebrating a Christian festival decidedly tacky. We can keep the better seasonal traditions like carol and nativity services, pantomime, charity collections, mince pies etc. and do without this throwback to prehistoric blood rites.
