Public Affairs
The League is a well respected lobby group in Westminster and the devolved parliaments.
Throughout many years of parliamentary campaigning – not least during the passage of the bill which banned hunting with dogs in 2004 – the League has developed an impressive range of contacts, which has given us the expertise and knowledge to lead on many campaigns on animal welfare. Most recently, as part of a “Team Badger” coalition, we successfully lobbied Parliament over its proposed badger cull. The Government have now postponed its plans, and we will continue the campaign to have the cull abandoned completely.
We currently have Senior Public Affairs Officers for England and Wales, and will shortly appoint Senior Public Affairs Officers for Northern Ireland and Scotland, who will work with the devolved assemblies. We are also appointing a Head of Public Affairs who will take a key role in managing our lobbying activity, alongside the League’s Director for Communications and Chief Executive.
Over the next few years, as we look towards the General Election due to be held in 2015, we will raise our profile even further by establishing a Parliamentary Friends of the League. This will not only strengthen our ties with current supporters, but will develop new working relationships in Parliament and promote our campaigns with a new generation of politicians from across the political spectrum, who are determined to stop cruelty in the name of sport.
