We’ve had many calls already this year from concerned League supporters asking who we recommend they vote for in this year’s National Trust Council Elections.
In previous years the pro-hunt group, Friends of the National Trust (FONT) have advised Trust members on which candidates they would like to see elected to serve on the Trust’s Council. However in the absence of any information from FONT we have done some research and can communicate various interesting facts about the following candidates:
Robin Page
Described as a farmer, journalist, political activist and former television presenter. He has a regular column in the Telegraph and also writes for The Countryman and the Shooting Times. He is the author of the book ‘The Hunting Gene’ which was described by Robin Hanbury-Tenison, writer, explorer and conservationist:
“Robin Page demonstrates again and again in this splendid book the real ways we should relate to nature. Anyone who reads it with an open mind cannot fail to be persuaded of the inescapable truth: hunting with hounds is a good and noble activity, which benefits both the prey and the rest of nature”.
He has also stated in a
Telegraph article that he does support hunting.
Laurie Magnus
Current Deputy Chairman was recommended in 2009 by the pro-hunting group FONT.
Sophie Andreae
Current council member and also recommended by FONT in 2009.
Andrew Green
Creator of the Kingfishers Bridge project, is recommended by Robin Page however we do not know his position on blood sports.
Of course in addition to the individuals you are able to vote for there is also a list of 34 organisations who are standing for election. One of these is the Countryside Alliance, who are a pro-hunting and shooting lobby group and who have been campaigning to have the Hunting Act repealed.
So if we were voting, we might think twice before giving our votes to the above candidates. Hopefully this information has been helpful, and to all National Trust members, happy voting.
