Badger cull meeting a huge success

Written by Christina on 13 June, 2012 : 09:00

We recently hosted a meeting at our Headquarters with various organisations who are all passionate about putting a stop to the controversial badger cull pilots.

Representatives from the Badger Trust, RSPCA, Humane Society International, Care for the Wild, Secret World and the Stroud 100 were all in attendance along with Brian May from the group 'Save Me'. The meeting was extremely productive and the League is really looking forward to continuing to work together to stop the badger cull.

Find out more about what the cull means and ways in which you can help.

Current news on the badger cull

Leading scientists Christl Donnelly and Rosie Woodroffe have published a letter in the journal, Nature stating that it will be impossible for farmers to kill at least 70 percent of badgers without risking the total eradication of local populations. Read more...

The date for the Badger Trust's Judicial Review hearing has been set for the 25th and 26th of June. Read more...

The Humane Society International have lodged a complaint with the Bern Convention stating that the governments proposals to licence badger shooting is not in line with our obligations to badgers as an annex III species which requires that their exploitation is regulated to keep populations 'out of danger'.  Brian May of the group 'Save me ' spoke at a meeting in Stroud, organised by local campaigners against the cull. He said "All the scientific evidence we have goes against it and says this isn't actually going to work." Read more...

lt is an appalling and shameful decision made with indecent haste, by a department run by Tory farmers and landowners. The plan is quite clearly flawed. How could the success of a cull be measured if it runs alongside other trials, ie tightening up cattle movement, and TB testing methods? Having witnessed the suffering of wildlife at the hands of amatuers, l fear that badgers would suffer immeasurable pain and stress if this ill thought out plan is allowed to proceed. lt is well documented that it would be difficult for even a professional to dispatch a badger humanely. l hope common sense prevails, as it has in Wales.

In Wales they have stopped the badger cull and are doing a five year vaccination scheme, why can't they do this in England, is it because this government love murdering wild life?????

Please keep up the good work. Why do these people condone killing innocent creatures?????????? They must be mentally ill.All cruelty is criminal and must be stopped. If they feel the need to kill they should join the Forces.

Pleased to read above comment that Wales have stopped cull & are doing 5yrvaccination. Living in wales & always been against the cull, this is first I have heard about this? Same with pigeons, one city using birth control in the seed& showing this works without going in & killing these! There is always a humane method without killing>

How come people of any political party can think they have a right to kill wild animals which have been around for millions of years? Theyhave as much right as humans to survive and are mammalian species ie with sentient young. Cattle on the other hand are a product of man's commercialism and are artificially produced to meet market demand. More importantly, one of my best life experiences was a 10 minute encounter with a young badger, which I save dfrom certain death on a busy road

Jill Dean is slightly wrong in that the trial is only to determine the practicalities such as is shooting safe, can the farmers organise it properly etc. The decisiion is already made that it is the way to go, despite scientific evidence that it will have at most 16% improvement over 9 years, and the government even accept that but still wanna kill.

I live in New Zealand where we do not have badgers, so when visiting UK in 2010 it was a magical experience to see badgers in our friends backyard in Solihull. We have West Highland White terriers, and many years ago they were used in UK to flush out badgers from their setts and kill them....mans cruelty goes on and on to the animals of our world. Shame on England.
