Last week the National Assembly of Panama passed a law which completely bans bullfighting across the country. The legislation is the first in the world to explicitly ban all forms of bullfighting, from the traditional Spanish corrida to the deceptively titled “bloodless” Portuguese-style bullfighting.
The general term "lidia" has been used to prevent the bullfighting lobby from trying to circumvent a ban and introduce "bloodless bullfighting", as they have attempted to do in countries such as Ecuador and Mexico.
And the good news doesn’t stop there. The new legislation also bans dogfighting, greyhound racing and hare coursing. Furthermore it almost completely bans the use of animals in circuses, having introduced strong regulations which would make it extremely difficult for circuses to continue to use animals as part of their performances.
This new legislation is the first animal protection law in Panamanian history – and it’s a fantastic start! Animal welfare campaigners in Panama have done a remarkable job and they will continue to fight for even more reform in future, such as a ban on cockfighting which remains very popular in the country.
