Take Action for Greyhounds!

Written by on 15 March, 2011 : 09:50

Animal welfare organisation Greyt Exploitations has launched a petition calling on Irish authorities to withdraw proposals which would effectively create a commercial greyhound racing industry in China.

Following discussions with a delegation of Chinese businessmen, Dick O’Sullivan – the former CEO of the Irish Greyhound Board – said that they had been approached to “design the tracks, the facilities, the kennels, provide the dogs and set up the control and integrity operation as well as the Tote."

Organisations such as the League and Greyt Exploitations have long campaigned for improved welfare and conditions for racing greyhounds in Britain and Ireland, and it is highly likely that conditions for the animals would be even worse in China, which has much less regulation.

The petition will be presented to the Irish authorities following a demonstration in Dublin city centre this Saturday 19th March. Please lend your support to this urgent campaign by signing the petition now.

Please don't let animals suffer just because they have no voice. Their love is unconditional, don't make abuse and suffering a condition

no to a greyhound racing industry in China!

How can we support the Chinese people who are concerned about animal welfare?
Emzi Frater
Conditions and associated problems currently facing greyhounds are already a serious enough problem and difficult to regulate within our legal system without the creation of a new commercialised industry in China. The public will not support such a proposal.

As there are no human rights in China now, it will be an age, if ever, to have any animal rights there. Currently, research tells us, that over 15,000 greyhounds, who fail to make the grade, are 'got rid of' in the UK and Northern Ireland, every year. Most of these greyhounds are bred in Ireland. Many greyhound pups are killed because breeders pick out a couple and then want their selected pups to get the best from the bitch. The IGB Welfare department is purely 'window dressing' and, I think, this present idea of theirs, to export greyhounds to China, illustrates this very clearly. It isn't just hearsay that the Chinese eat dogs. Go onto Animals Asia UK and you will see the reality. Greyhounds sent to China for the Irish Greyhound Board greed, will, when they get injured or become too slow, end up being beaten, to tenderise their flesh, and then very inhumanely killed. The Irish Greyhound Board should hang their heads in shame but, they won't. For this reason, we must all stand up for these innocent and gentle dogs and forbid this cruel trade.

As if the poor creatures don't suffer enough in the UK and Ireland because of the racing industry.

An excellent point is made by M Stoneman about helping Chinese who are concerned about animal welfare, some parts of China could teach the Uk a thing or two about animal welfare. If these people could be got on board this would be a far more effective way of stoping the IGB proposed deal than tarring everyone with the same brush
