Ecuador to hold referendum in May?

Written by on 24 February, 2011 : 16:00

Several weeks ago the President of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, announced that a national referendum would be held covering a number of constitutional issues. Among these issues will be the question of whether or not to ban bullfighting in the South American country.

On Tuesday the president of Ecuador's Electoral Council, Omar Simon, said that the controversial referendum could be held as soon as May – news which has been greeted with great excitement by anti-corrida campaigners across the world.

The League is optimistic about the outcome of the referendum and will be doing all we can to help our colleagues in Ecuador to push for a decisive ‘Yes’ vote.

The question of whether or not to ban bullfighting is one of ten questions to be included in the far-reaching national referendum.

I hate all cruelty to animals and bull fighting is disgustingly cruel. The animal has no hope of living and is tortured to death. I cannot believe in the 21st century that anyone still does this to bulls. I would never, ever visit a country that does this to an animal.
