Horses electrocuted at Newbury racecourse

Written by on 14 February, 2011 : 11:10

Two horses electrocuted in a tragic accident at Newbury racecourse are believed to have been killed by faulty underground cables punctured during maintenance work. Fenix Two and Marching Song suddenly reared up in pain before collapsing on the ground.

This incident may seem like a freakish one-off, but it is not the first time such a tragedy has occurred. A number of similar incidents over the years have been recorded as “unexplained equine death.” However, research published in 2008 in the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science suggests that a high proportion of these incidents can in fact be attributed to electric shocks from underground cables.

The League hopes that lessons will be learned from this incident, and continues to campaign for improved welfare and safer conditions for racing animals.

One might expect regular checks for underground electric cables and damage given there are devices to do this. Let's hope this becomes the practice before all meetings.

All the hand wringing and solemn words from the racing industry does not fool me, they'll be screaming as usual at the horses as they are whipped to run faster at the next race.

I abhor horse racing because of the cruelty involved and this latest tragic event highlights how little these people actually care about the horses they work with. Some of the horses that survived the electric shock were forced to race less than half an hour later despite being traumatised at the very least. So desperate for their beloved 'sport' not to be disrupted any further, these callous individuals hadn't even the decency to allow the animals time to recover properly.

It was a preventable tragedy, but if these horses had fallen during the race, broken legs or had heart attacks they wouldn't be alive now either. Too many race horse deaths, one every other day. Should they really be so disposable? It's a very cruel sport in my opinion.
