That’s the percentage of non-target animals which are caught in snares as estimated by the Independent Working Group on Snares (2005). According to this report it would be extremely difficult to reduce this to less than forty percent. Forty percent of all the animals killed will not be the intended victim!

Now this is by no means new information so why are we still fighting to put a stop to the suffering caused by these horrendous and barbaric devices?

It seems like every week we get another phone call or come across another report in a local newspaper about the lucky escape of a pet dog or the sad ending to a pet cat after falling victim to these silent killers of the countryside.

The League has presented the Department of Environment Food and Rural Affairs with thousands of signatures from members of the public who are demanding that snares be made illegal and we currently have a petition asking our Prime Minister, David Cameron to take steps to put an end to what he has already described as “very very cruel”.

Please make sure you’ve done your bit. You can email the Rt Hon Caroline Spelman MP, Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, or you can download our paper petition; and make sure you’ve urged your MP to sign EDM899 which calls for an end to the manufacture, sale and use of snares.

If an ardent supporter of something as barbaric as hunting (i.e. David Cameron) thinks snaring is extremely cruel, then that says a lot about just how much the victims (whether intended or otherwise) suffer as a result of these horrible traps.
