Proud to be a bunny hugger

Written by on 09 December, 2010 : 15:20

It’s always an event in the office when Alice Barnard, the new Chief Executive of the Countryside Alliance writes to her supporters and today has been no exception. The latest musings from La Chief produced the fantastically dumb remark we tweeted earlier:

“I always think that if a fox were ugly no one would mind hunting”

This, of course, speaks volumes about its author and is borne of the mentality that sees anyone who defends wildlife from the horror of bloodsports as ‘bunny huggers’. The article itself was intended to highlight the Alliance’s ‘charitable’ work promoting the consumption of game meat, but Alice couldn’t resist a paean to the kind of people she represents and who presumably swallow the guff she infrequently scribbles. Here’s a heart warming description of the folk she has in mind:

"The Countryside Alliance represents over 100,000 people. Supporters of country sports, they own and care for animals in their homes and on farms whilst managing and controlling others, such as foxes and, yes, deer."

Alternatively here’s a link to how one of those same people saw fit to treat a hound recently – but a word of caution: the reality may be hard to stomach…particularly if you are a ‘bunny hugger’.

If being compassionate and having empathy with all sentient beings is being a 'bunny hugger' then I'm proud to be one.

I respect the lives of all creatures, including those ugly two-legged ones that have guns and like to chase and kill the more pretty animals.

I work in an animal shelter and years ago, we used to regularly take in "stray" hounds which people had found running along the roads etc. We initially used to contact the local hunt to tell them each time a hound was here... until we were told by one of the hunt members that those hounds which wandered off would be shot as were clearly no use for hunting. We then made an unofficial decision to forget to contact the hunt... Incidentally, despite the CA's assertion that hunters love and value their hounds, the ones which were handed into us were always in pretty poor condition. Also, despite another assertion, ie that hounds cannot become pets, I know of several which have very successfully been homed as pets.

"Bunny Hugger" is a typical insult, hurled at anyone of decent feeling whose godliness makes the ungodly feel uncomfortable. Maybe it reminds the badmouther of the natural sensibilities she or he was compelled to repress in the terrible compulsion to kill for the sake of it.

All power to the animal shelter above thank god we have people like them. Also dont they shoot the hounds anyway when the can no longer keep up with the hunt because they are old ,ill,or just not useful to them anymore. That is the reality of the situation and has been for many many years they dont advertise that the country Alliance do they.
